Isn't Sakivithi Ranasingha, the man against whom there are complaints on a fraud of 5 million Rupees, made by various people at the Mirihana police station?. He is suppose to have left the country. What kind of an English teacher is this idiot? This beggar cannot pronounce the sounds even properly.

The benefits of the Art of Wire Tree-making is far reaching and must be experienced to be understood. Truly, a lesson between 'hearing' and 'listening' is immediately apparent.
"On one hand"...(I hold a roll of wire and say); "This is an example of someone who heard me tell them how to make a tree...on the the other hand,"...(I hold a finished tree and say); "Now this is an example of someone who 'LISTENED'...SEE, 'listening' requires action."
I don't think I know...I just know I'm thinking.

One of the intents of this post was to point out the need to bring attention to the O/L pass rates, and diffuse the attention from the race to 13,000 places in the universities. A decent pass rate at the GCE (O/L) is a more tangible goal, I believe, than trying create more public universities for all those qualify at the A/L. Overall, the intent was to identify some realistic goals. Yes, transferring spouses of the Colombo-based officials to the central province is one of many things that need to be done to get there. However, I don't think education has stood still in this country. Curricula have changed, largely for the better. There are more projects and assessments at the school level.

As for international schools, it is time they got a little more respect, I think. In countries where governments work, you don't need international schools. In USA, UK, Europe primary and secondary education is provided almost 100% out of public funds. In countries that are characterized by low growth, poor governance and many other ills, citizens are the people who suffer if there were no private opportunities. Most countries have understood this reality (private secondary enrolment: Brazil , 19%; Colombia,40%, India, 40%; Indonesia, 54%; http://www.iea.org.uk/files/upld-publication48pdf.) We have pursued the holy grail of honest politicians and conscientious officials long enough. It is not going to get any better. Sri Lanka has to get real and give more support to the international schools and let some of the tutories grow into proper schools. Giving some help with buildings and land and setting up a regulatory mechanism would be the smart thing to do by the government.

All this discussion about IT, teachers and O level standards are fine, but in reality msot schools in Sri Lanka show little difference from 10, 20, 30 or even 40 years ago. Broken blackboards propped up on chairs, several classes in one hall with noise levels and distractions making good teaching or learning difficult if not impossible. In the Central Province alone tere is a shortage of over 600 English teachers, mainly in rural areas, whilst many urban schools are over-staffed. So-called International Schools and tuition classes have become parallel education systems.

Hi,

I would like to get in touch with you about a development related youth forum. It will be launched very soon.
Through the site we hope to capture the voices and ideas of young people in Sri Lanka, and also to highlight issues, share ideas, etc.

Furthermore, infoshare is also looking at some IT literacy improvement projects. There maybe some possibilities we can discuss.

Pls mail me on anjula@info-share.org
cheers!
